Ladies of Literature – Role Models You Need to Know About

The legacy of women has varied over the centuries, from fictional characters like Bella Swan who throws herself off a cliff because her boyfriend dumped her to a selfish Daisy who can’t set aside her spoiled ways and leave the man who cheats on her. If you put a real face to these women, they would be among your fan girls and your Kim Kardashians of the real world. Are these the women we should view as role models?

Strong heroines are not only an amazing selling tactic for a book but they also set readers on the right path of life. Women should not be associated by a stereotype, such as emotional, weak, or “they can’t drive.” The more women are put down in books and movies, the harder the fight will be to be considered equals. I pose one question to you my readers,

“Why the hell is this still an issue in modern day society?”

For a few moments, set aside your Juliets and your Kathys and take in the idea of these 4 ladies of literature who not only set a good example for readers, but also stand up for themselves and radiate a sense of confidence all women should possess and flaunt.

1. Hermione Granger – The Harry Potter Series

Hermione was born a Muggle and taught herself about the Magical World long before she ever received her Hogwarts letter. She gained her vast amount of knowledge from books, learning all that she could about anything and everything, even when others thought she was a little extreme. But at a very young age, Hermione realized she was different, and instead of lashing out like a number of well known characters (looking at you Holden Caulfield), she accepted her unique qualities and this Muggle flourished into the courageous and inspiring friend we know today. Hermione taught us that it’s OK to be different, have buck teeth and to love books.

2. Elizabeth Bennett – Pride & Prejudice

In a time period where women had little to no rights, Lizzie Bennett decided she would control her own future as well as who and when she would marry. As women had little say about anything, Lizzie took a stand against a world controlled by men, setting her own goals, her own rules and her life choices. Outspoken, smart and defiant, Lizzie taught us to never settle and to break barriers that may be set. This modern lady of the past thought years ahead of her time, envisioning a world of her own control. Her prize? Mr. Darcy.

3. Elphaba Thropp – Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West

Many aren’t aware that the hit musical was based off of a book, but rest assured, most amazing things are based off of books. This opinionated, stubborn and sassy lady of green, grew up in a household where she wasn’t valued or loved because she was a different color. Race is shown in an entirely different way for our heroine and through her struggles to be accepted, she taught us to fight for what we believe in, no matter what color our skin is. Everyone deserves rights, the green people and the not green people, also the animals, which if you read the book, you’ll understand more.

4. Lucy Pevensie – The Chronicles of Narnia Series

Every child who has read this series has opened up a wardrobe in hopes that it would lead them to the magical world of Narnia. Growing up in WWII was no easy lifestyle for this young adventurer, but it taught her to cherish life and to live it to the fullest, even if you have to live it more than once. Lucy loved adventures and literally became Queen of her own fantasy. Setting her fears aside, she inspired readers to travel and explore the world around them because if you don’t, if you simply look at what’s right in front of you and never open that wardrobe, you may never find your Narnia.

Boundaries should always be broken, adventures should always be taken and more importantly, stereotype should just be a word and not a reality.

Emma Watson to Star as Belle in New Disney Film

Ex-Harry Potter star and one of Hollywood’s classiest starlets, Emma Watson has announced that she will be starring in the new Disney live action film, “Beauty and the Beast” as Belle.

The announcement came from Watson herself via Facebook stating, “I’m finally able to tell you… that I will be playing Belle in Disney’s new live-action Beauty and the Beast! It was such a big part of my growing up, it almost feels surreal that I’ll get to dance to ‘Be Our Guest’ and sing ‘Something There’. My six-year-old self is on the ceiling – heart bursting. Time to start some singing lessons. I can’t wait for you to see it. Emma xx”

According to Disney, the film will begin filming later next year and as Watson stated, she’ll be needing some singing lessons, which basically means, they are keeping the “Beauty and the Beast” classic a musical (sigh of relief). The film will be directed by, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn” director, Bill Condon and produced by David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman.

Could this new “Beauty and the Beast” take on Frozen” when it comes to love, devotion and most importantly, ratings? With Watson at the lead, it will definitely give it a run for its money.

Best Movie Series’ to Watch on a Snow Day

As the snow falls and builds into several inches or feet, depending on where you live, schools close, offices shut down and for one day (maybe more) we are able to slow down and relax a little (cue angelic choir). Throw on your cutest and comfiest pj’s, your fuzzy slippers, grab some hot chocolate and a blanket and sit yourself down in front of the TV with these movie series suggestions. You may be there for a while, so why not join your favorite characters for an entire day as they cast spells, journey to Mordor, or travel back in time (spoilers).

Harry Potter

Let’s face it everyone loves Harry Potter. Even the haters, though they will never admit it. With eight films of spell casting, broom flying, Muggle loving, Umbridge hating adventure, this series will keep you glued to the screen from early morning to the following morning (because that’s how long it takes to watch them all, I’ve been there).

The Lord of the Rings

Via Facebook/The Lord of the Rings

Join our beloved Hobbits Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin, as they journey through Middle Earth to toss the ring into the fires of Mordor. Not only is this a classic, it has something for everyone, like really hot elves (thank you Orlando Bloom and Liv Tyler) and epic battles. Be sure to keep your eye out… well for that big eye, because it may be watching you!

The Hobbit

If you really want to get crazy, because you’re literally a hard core Tolkien worshiper (we won’t judge) then add the Hobbit trilogy to your Lord of the Rings binge. Why not add some hot dwarves and a dragon voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch to your day, it’s not like anything could go wrong with that.

Back to the Future

Via Facebook/Back to the Future

Once you hit 88 miles per hour, you’re going to see some serious… awesomeness! This 80s classic brings you back in time to 1955 Hill Valley, then to 2015 (were there are flying cars and hover boards, which we sadly don’t have) and then back to 1885 to the old west. Join Marty and the Doc for an epic adventure through time and space and be sure to avoid a major paradox, those aren’t good.

Toy Story

Via Facebook/Toy Story

If you have young kids, sit them down in front of this heartfelt Disney Pixar series that teaches us that sticking together and staying loyal to the ones we love is all we need in life. Woody, Buzz and the gang are not only a great influence, but hilarious to watch. They make you think twice about throwing out your old toys…

Star Wars

Via Facebook/Star Wars

Last, but by no means least, because it’s Star Wars, this epic space adventure has it all. From droids, to death stars, jumping up on your couch with a toilet plunger and pretending it’s a light saber is perfectly normal. If you are one of the few fans that acknowledge the three prequels as actual films, feel free to toss those in as well, but if you are a true hard core fan and don’t acknowledge those films, our upmost apologies for even mentioning them.
